Relief to hangover

Hangover! Let’s at least detoxify while drinking

Everyone has had one of those days where you suffered from hangover and regretted drinking the night before. Over-drinking, such as drinking mixed drinks, might result in a hangover that even a good bowl of soup or hangover drinks don’t even solve the problem. This also causes problems in brain cells due to too much active oxygen species inside the body.

Around 500,000 brain cells die and are regenerated daily, and around 2 million brain cells die from alcohol consumption

If you are at a situation where you want to quit drinking but can’t due to working environment, put on and sleep with hydrogen inhalation nasal cannula (more than 5 hours). Once you wake up your body will feel as if you haven’t had a single drop of alcohol.

This experiment was performed on 10 different people with different alcohol dosage, 5 times, 5 hours per trial, and the mitigation of hangover was confirmed. In Japan, there was a study result that inhaling hydrogen after drinking has a huge effect on hangover cure. June 24th, 2016, research groups in Prefectural University of Hiroshima and Mie University reported a paper that examined the relationship between hydrogen and hangover.

When acetaldehyde, a cause of hangover, meets hydrogen, concentration is lowered. Ethanol in alcohol is metabolized in the liver, acetaldehyde becomes into acetate and is excreted as carbon dioxide and water.

Alcohol (Ethanol) metabolic reaction occurring in the liver

However, if one ingests alcohol beyond the metabolic ability, the intermediate, acetaldehyde is accumulated. Acetaldehyde combines protein and DNA, and affects ATP production of the mitochondria, resulting in high toxicity (increase of active oxygen) in liver cells and many other tissues. Due to this, many symptoms such as nausea, headache, shivering, acute alcoholic gastritis appear.

The research group added soju (type of alcohol) and trace of hydrogen into a test tube containing 50ppm of acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde concentration rapidly decreased, and from 20 minutes to 120 minutes into the experiment the concentration slowly decreased, and after 18 hours into the experiment the concentration reached near 0.

However, in the same experiment where hydrogen was not added, acetaldehyde concentration showed no change after 18 hours. What causes the hydrogen to detoxify acetaldehyde? The secret is in hydrogen’s reducing power. Acetaldehyde is created when ethanol is metabolized in the body, or during oxidization of alcohol that has been stored long-term. Here when hydrogen molecule is added to acetaldehyde, due to the reducing power of hydrogen, it turns into ethanol and the toxicity is deactivated. Reduction of acetaldehyde due to hydrogen, the hangover cure effect of hydrogen inhalation mechanism has been partially discovered and it implied that it might be effective on preventing alcoholic hepatitis, liver cancer, and liver cirrhosis.
